Orgain Organic Protein Review | What everyone Should Know Before Buying (2020)

Share

Are you wondering if Orgain Organic Protein is worth the hype? How does Orgain Organic compare with all the great high-quality protein powders out there?

The company’s history is based around its founder beating cancer and being inspired to create a brand that really focuses on nutrition. So, is Orgain Organic Protein really free of any harmful ingredients?

The company has many types of proteins both in powder and liquid form and they have been focusing their marketing efforts in their Plant-Based ranged which will be the main focus of this review as well.

However they also have a whey-based line and now a Keto-Friendly line which makes me wonder if they are trying to jump in all the possible wagons without a clear philosophy behind them.

But let’s get started with our in-depth review and let the facts speak!

*Keep reading to find out which protein powder we recommend over Orgain Organic Protein.*

What is Orgain Organic Protein?

Note: For the first part of this article, I’ll focus on the Plant-Based Orgain Organic Protein Powder.

This product is a vegan protein powder that provides 21 grams of protein and only 150 calories per serving.

The powder contains no artificial colors or flavorings. Each 45-gram serving is 100% vegan, gluten-free, GMO-free, soy free and is USDA organic.

The products have a good protein to calorie ratio which makes it ideal for those trying to keep their calories and carbs low.

Some people who follow a plant-based diet like to supplement their meals with a protein shake since it is an easy way to increase their protein intake.

Protein is made of amino acids which are the building blocks of muscle and connective tissue. It is also the only macronutrient that can not be stored as fat so people who have a hard time losing weight often try to have diets higher in protein.

While it is completely possible to get all the protein you need from plant-based whole foods, it is true that most vegan protein sources also have a high amount of carbs.

In this case, people who are trying to keep their carbohydrates low would benefit from drinking a plant-based protein shake.

Protein shakes like Orgain Organic also help you feel full for longer periods so they make a healthy snack or post-workout drink.

This protein powder is one the cheaper end vs other plant-based shakes which is maybe the reason why it’s one of the well known in the vegan community.

They also pride themselves in their flavor claiming to be approved by picky people so let’s dive deeper into the taste and benefits of this protein powder.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Is it healthy?

The short answer is yes. Orgain Organic Protein Powder is made with certified organic products free of a synthetic hormone, pesticides, antibiotics, artificial sweetener, and GMOS.

It also offers a complete protein which means it contains all essential amino acids your body can not produce on its own making it ideal for vegans and those trying to increase their protein intake.

Orgain Organic Protein is made with pure plant-based protein sources including peas, chia seeds, and brown rice which are compared to soy or dairy protein are much healthier and less likely to cause an allergy or intolerance.

Certain percentage of people have reported some bloating and stomach pain shortly after drinking this product however they report it goes away after their body got used to the protein and fiber which is sometime less than they were used to consume.

There are no other reports of negatives effects on this product. However, if you have any special dietary restrictions, concerns, or medical conditions, it is always recommended to check with your doctor before adding any new products into your diet.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Benefits

There are many benefits to taking a vegan protein powder, especially an organic one and it is no different in the case of Orgain Organic Protein.

Here are some of the benefits you can reap by drinking this protein shake:

  • Increase your protein intake: Whole foods plant-based protein sources are great but they are usually packed with lots of carbs. This is not very convenient for people who are trying to lose weight so drinking a protein shake is a good way to increase your protein while keeping your carbohydrates and calories low.
  • Allergen-free: Orgain Organic Protein is soy, dairy and gluten-free making it a great alternative for both vegan and those with a dairy, soy, or wheat intolerance. Furthermore, people that are not necessarily dairy intolerant, have reported negative effects when drinking whey protein so this is a great alternative for them too.

  • Muscle Building: Protein is essential to maintain and grow muscle. If you are an athlete or bodybuilder, keeping a diet high in protein is essential for your performance and goals. When you train, you create microdamage in your muscle tissue so it can later ‘repair’ and hence grow. That’s when your body will need the protein you consume to repair and create more muscle tissue.
  • Recovery: Athletes who consume a plant-based diet have reported less inflammation and faster recovery times after each training session. If you are following a plant-based diet, a vegan protein powder like Orgain Organic can be a good addition to your routine.
  • Weight Loss: Protein shakes can help your weight loss journey by proving a healthy and efficient alternative versus unhealthy snacks. It also makes you feel full for longer helping you stick to your diet and goals. Finally, protein shakes will help preserve your muscle ensuring you lose mostly fat which is what will help you look fit and toned.
orgain organic protein review
  • Healthy Fiber: FIber is an essential part of a healthy diet and Organic organic protein comes with both soluble and insoluble fiber. The insoluble fiber helps your digestive system to function perfectly with no trouble while the soluble fiber, helps you to feel full and happy.
  • Metabolism Booster: besides being an essential macronutrient, protein has the potential to boost your metabolism since protein molecules are long chains that take about three hours to break down and assimilate.
  • Micronutrients: Besides the protein, plant-based powders like Orgain’s come packed with important minerals and vitamins your body required for proper functioning.
  • Caloric Control: A consistent caloric deficit is essential for weight loss however, continuing calories can be overwhelming when creating meals or eating out. Using a calorie-controlled protein shakes as a snack or supplements can help take your mind off calorie-counting for a while making the whole process easier.

As you can see, chossing a plant-based protein shake has many benefits, many of which apply to Orgain Organic.

In general, plant-based shakes benefits can be resumed in:

  • Supports fat loss
  • Convenient high protein snack for pre- and post-workout.
  • Easy to digest versus whey protein shakes.
  • Suitable for those with allergies to milk and other proteins.
  • Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
  • Supports muscle maintenance and growth.
  • High-quality alternative to soy and protein

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Taste

Orgain Organic Plant Based Protein Powder comes in 6 flavors: Creamy Chocolate Fudge, Chocolate Coconut, Penau Butter, Chocolate Penaut Butter, Natural Unsweetened and Vanilla bean.

For the purposes of this review, we tried the vanilla bean flavor, formerly called sweet vanilla.

I found the ‘vanilla’ part to be very subtle and the ‘sweet’ part to be the most predominant. I personally like my protein shakes sweet so they almost feel like a dessert but depending on your preferences this could be a pro or a con for you.

I tried it with oat milk and water (separately) and while it wasn’t bad, I wasn’t impressed with either. It was more sweet than anything with a slight aftertaste of rice or oatmeal.

The directions advice to drink it with coconut milk as well so if you like that, it could be a better mix. However, I think the coconut milk flavor would overpower the vanilla taste which in that case would eliminate the purpose of getting a flavored protein powder in the first place.

However, if you’d rather keep your calories to a minimum you can totally have it with just water and it will be ok.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Mixability

The directions say to mix 2 scoops in 8-10 fluid ounces of water, almond milk, coconut milk, or your preference and shake in a blender or shaker cup.

I follow those instructions using water and a shaker cup and got a nice, creamy consistency.

I was pleasantly surprised since there’s no lecithin in this product so I was expecting to find big clumps of powder in my mouth.

When mixed with almond milk I did got a few a few small clumps — but it was definitely above average.

In conclusion, Orgain Organic Plant-Based Protein Powder mixes relatively easily depending on what liquid you use.

By seeing the results I got with a shaker cup, I would say this is definitely NOT a powder you can whip up with just a spoon.

I imagine it would come out perfectly in a blender no matter if you use water and milk but most powder would do the same.

If but if you want to make one at work or the gym, using water and shaker cup will do the trick.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Macronutrients

Another important factor of a protein powder is its macronutrient ratio. This means how many grams of protein, fat, and carbohydrates it provides, as well as how many calories.

Each serving of Orgain Organic Protein contains 21 grams of protein, 3.5 grams of fat, and 15 grams of carbs. These macronutrients provide a total of 150 calories

With 21 grams of protein and 150 calories, this shake is on the lower end, making it more suitable for someone trying to lose weight than for someone trying to gain muscle mass.

The carb count is 15 grams, which is definitely higher than most protein powder. However it 6 of those carbs are fiber and 5 are sugar alcohols (which are not digestible) so once you factor those in, it brings the total of net carbs to 5 grams.

Furthermore, the added fiber will also help you feel fuller for longer while supporting your digestions

the macros are ok for someone trying to lose weight but if we were to compare it with others in that category it wouldn’t be the best option. (See our top pick for weight loss)

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Ingredients

The ingredients on Organic Orgain Protein Powder check almost all the boxes consumers nowadays are looking for.

Its blend consists of organic pea protein, organic brown rice protein, organic chia seed, and organic hemp protein.

The use of different plant-based protein sources allows it to provide all the essential amino-acids your body needs.

Sometimes vegan proteins can get a bad rep because of not being ‘complete proteins’ but the truth is nowadays most good quality protein powders do the same so Orgain’s is not too different in that aspect.

They have also done a great job of not having any unnecessary additives. Orgain Organic is It’s FREE of dairy, soy, gluten, and lactose, GMOs, artificial colors, and flavors.

As sweetening agents they have chosen organic stevia and monk fruit and some decent (but unpronounceable) binding agents that are necessary for a protein powder to work properly.

Overall the ingredients are one of the best parts about this protein powder!

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Cost

You can find Orgain Organic Plant-Based Protein Powder on Amazon at $25.59 for a 2.03-pound container (on a One-time purchase) or $24.38 (when subscribing on repeat deliveries

That works out to about $ 1.12 or $1.07 per serving which is a bit cheaper than other soy-free organic vegan protein powder which can cost around $1.7 – $2.00 per serving.

However, most of them are lower in carbohydrates so they might be worth it depending on your preferences.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Side Effects

Protein powders are a processed product so side effects are not totally uncommon.

SIde effects can be caused by a variety of reasons. In some cases, it is because of an intolerance to some of the ingredients. In this scenario, it is advisable to stop drinking said product since the effects will most likely continue.

Other times, some side effects can be experienced because your body is not used to processing that much protein or fiber at once. In this case, the side effects should go away after a few days.

Orgain’s Organic protein appears to be a great option for those with allergies to soy, dairy, gluten, and lactose.

However, the ingredients in the creamer which are used as thickeners (acacia gum, erythritol & guar gum) have been known to sometimes cause side effects such as bloating and nausea.

I did experience some stomach pain and belly bloating about 20 – 30 minutes after taking this protein powder. It wasn’t too bad or lasted too long but it was a bit uncomfortable so just keep it in mind especially if you are sensitive to the mentioned ingredients.

These ingredients are present in many protein powders and the reason why some people report side effects and others don’t is still unknown so we can not assure what your experience will be.

In any case, make sure to check with your doctor if you have some unpleasant effects that do not go away.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Customer Service

One major perk of this protein powder is that pride themselves in their excellent customer service.

They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee policy without a time restriction so if for any reason you are not completely satisfied with the product then you can get a refund (minus shipping and handling).

This is something not many companies offers and makes it a great reason to give this protein powder a chance withour any risks.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Best Uses

After completing this review of Orgain Organic Protein, I can say that this shake is best suited for people who are trying to lose weight and body fat.

It is low in calories and fats making it ideal for those trying to create a caloric deficit while staying full.

The 21 grams of protein it offers is also enough for those trying to tone up. However is a compared to other protein powders, it is on the lower end.

People who are looking to gain muscle mass should favor options with higher protein content so if you are looking to bulk up., I wouldn’t recommend this particular shake

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Is it Keto Friendly?

The Keto diet seems to be going nowhere and with it, some vegans are wondering if they could adhere to those principles as well.

The diet focuses on weight loss by eating a lot of healthy fats, a moderate amount of protein, restricting carbohydrates, and eliminating sugar. “This forces the body into ketosis or burning fat instead of sugar and carbs.”

The website KetoPicks grades products based on KetoSafe standards. Their 5-star keto-friendly product ratings are an estimate of a product’s impact on ketosis based on a formula that weighs and deducts points for net carbohydrates above 5% of total calories and hidden carbohydrate ingredients based on their glycemic index and estimated quantity.

According to this standards Orgain’s Organic Protein Plant-Based Protein Powder “Creamy Chocolate Fudge” qualified as ‘Moderately Keto Compatible” while the other flavors qualified as ‘Not Keto Compatible”

orgain organic protein review

However, Orgain has now a new product that is ‘Exceptionally Keto Compatible which is Orgain KETO powder. (Not vegan friendly).

It is a specially designed keto-friendly protein powder with 10g of grass-fed collagen peptides and 5g of MCTs from coconuts.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Is it Good for Weight Loss?

According to all the reviews I have read, this protein powder is mostly used for people who are trying to lose weight.

Considering that the basic principle of weight loss is a consistent caloric deficit, consuming a protein shake can help people reach their goals in several ways:

  • Helps you stay full longer avoiding unhealthy snacks
  • Works a low-calorie snack or meal
  • It helps you be aware of how many calories you are consuming.
  • It is convenient to bring with you so you avoid resourcing to junk or unhealthy foods when hungry.

Orgain Organic Protein is also low in calories and fats compared to other protein powders so in that sense is more greed towards weight loss vs. other shakes that can be more suitable for people trying to put on muscle.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Is it Good to Gain Muscle?

Before answering this question it is important to understand that the key to muscle gain is a consistent caloric surplus along with resistance training.

Part of this caloric surplus should be an adequate amount of protein since it contains the building blocks your body will use to create new muscle tissue.

In this sense, since Orgain Organic Portein provides a significant amount of protein we could say that it is “good” for muscle gain. However it does not mean it is the best alternative.

Considering that there are protein shakes out there which are higher in protein and calories, I wouldn’t choose Orgain if I my main goal were to gain muscle mass.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Can I Use It As A Meal Replacement?

One of the ‘best uses’ in the packaging suggest you can drink it as a meal replacement and considering the comments and related searches online I think that is one of the main ways people are having it.

However, if we take a look at the nutritional information, one serving only provides 150 calories which is way less than what any healthy meal should be.

Furthermore, Orgain Organic Protein Powder does not show any information on what vitamins and minerals it provides so it is hard to say if it could even be similar to what should should expect from. whole-foods plant-based meal.

People using it as a meal replacement are probably trying to lose weight by cutting down in calories but in the meantime, they are also depriving their bodies of the nutrients necessary for long term overall health.

There are many other meal replacement shakes with better nutritional profiles that can support your weight loss goals without any disadvantages.

Orgain has a meal replacement powder so if that is what you are looking for make sure to pick the right product.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Is the Creamer Vegan?

A lot of people wonder if the famous “creamer base” in Orgain Organic Protein is vegan, and to be honest I do find the name a bit confusing.

However, when checking the ingredients we can verify that they are all vegan friendly.

Such ingredients include:  Organic Acacia Gum, Organic High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Organic Inulin, Organic Rice Dextrins, Organic Rice Bran Extract, and Organic Rosemary Extract.

In conclusion, yes, the Orgain’s Creamer Base id 100% Vegan.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Is it Gluten-Free?

According to Orgain’s website:

“Just as important as what’s in Orgain’s products is what’s not in them: all of our products are non-GMO, gluten-free, soy-free, and do not contain artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, or preservatives; and nearly all Orgain products are certified Organic.”

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Is it Organic?

Although the product had the word “organic” in its name, it is still a valid question to ask.

The Plant-Based Protein Powder is Certified USDA Organic as well as nearly all Orgain products.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Does it Contain Heavy Metals?

The Clean Label Project recently tested 131 of America’s best selling animal-derived and plant-based protein powders for heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury), pesticides, and other harmful substances.

The study showed that many protein powders had significant levels of contaminants.

The protein powders were scored with 1 to 5 stars based on their level of contaminants in one serving. 3 stars was considered to be average, 5 stars is above average in overall purity. 1 star is below average.

Orgain was tested later and their Organic Vanilla Bean All-In-One Nutrition Powder got 2 stars for purity. However, their Healthy Kids Organic Nutritional Shakes scored 5 stars for purity.

I emailed Orgain and they responded:

“Our products are tested using Covance Labs to meet our rigorous standards. We aim for levels from A++ to A+++ levels as outlined by the Natural News graphic below. We strive to be the industry leader and will continue to keep you in the loop.
Verified A+++
Lead < 0.025 ppm
Cadmium < 0.1 ppm
Arsenic < 0.62 ppm
Mercury < 0.006 ppm”

It is important to state that heavy metals are in our soil everywhere and we are getting them in our organic earth-grown fruits and veggies too.

The only difference is that now the products and supplements will need to have warning labels if metals are present at a higher level than what you would normally consume in a day eating healthy organic produce.

Orgain Organic Plant-Based Protein | Customer Reviews

orgain organic protein review

The reviews online for Orgain Organic Protein are somewhat mixed.

On Amazon it gets a 4.3 out of 5 as a general rating and its stronger feature is the quality of its ingredients. Next is its blending power and the flavor in the third place.

One customer who gave it a five-star rating, calls this their everyday “go to protein powder” and claims to have lost 60 pounds in the last 18 months of using the powder and has been able to keep it off.

On the other hand, another top-rated verified purchase review gave it one star and caims that the powder caused them “stomach pain and bloating”.

Price: $36.99 per 2.02 lb

Best Review

“The Orgain Superfoods protein powders are some of the best I’ve ever tasted! I’ve been enjoying the Vanilla Bean Superfoods powders for a couple of years, and mistakenly bought the Chocolate Fudge a few months ago. I’ve been spinning this stuff with almond milk, avocado, and frozen banana, and its like the thickest chocolate milkshake you had as a kid. I use it in smoothies for breakfast, lunch, or dinner if I’m in a hurry. Love this stuff!

Worst Review

I have been searching for a clean chocolate protein powder for months and had high hopes for this powder. Unfortunately, it tastes terrible and I will not be trying it again.

Best Review

“I love this protein powder. The main selling points were that it is organic, not loaded with sugar or carbohydrates, has superfood nutrients and probiotics, and was ~$30 or less. I have not been disappointed. My typical use is in a breakfast smoothie with unsweetened almond milk, 1 frozen banana, and 2 Tbsp organic powdered peanut butter. I only use 1 scoop of Orgain in that shake, as the Stevia makes it quite sweet. If I were to mix alone in water, I would consider using 2 scoops. I haven’t experienced any bloating, gas, or digestion issues. I highly recommend it and I will absolutely buy it again.

Worst Review

“I’ve been enjoying Orgain protein powders for a couple of years, and typically buy the Superfoods powder. However, they were out of the Vanilla Bean, so I ordered the vanilla “Protein & Greens” instead. I normally add about three handfuls of baby spinach to my smoothies and I can’t taste it, so I figured this would be just as mild. Wow, I was mistaken. I’m not sure if it’s the Kale and Broccoli, but it has a very “cruciferous” odor and it comes through loud and clear on the taste. I’ve only been able to choke it down by blending it with very sweet fruits. It’s still an excellent product, but the taste is not for me.

Best Review

“I’ve tried both flavors (chocolate & vanilla) and they both taste great! They are smooth and mix easily. I’ve seen quite a few keto protein powders that are collagen-based; however, this is the first one I know of that is plant-based. I have been trying to find a keto protein powder for quite some time now, and I settled on a dairy-based option that I had to add MCT oil to or collagen-based powders. This powder has it all and the macros are great. I love that it’s dairy-free as well.”

Worst Review

I’m so let down. I love the chocolate collagen protein powder from Orgain, which is also keto. This vanilla one comes with only 10 servings and is grainy and fake tasting. I’m very disappointed and will not reorder.”

Best Review

This is the best meal replacement shake I’ve had. The ingredients are clean, the taste is amazing and smooth, and it keeps me satisfied. I drink mine for breakfast before my workout and I feel like I have enough energy to get through. I’ve made it with almond milk, cashew milk, and even just water… all are great! This is one of the higher-priced shakes out there, but it is worth it. I’ve had many others, and they were either nasty tasting, gritty in texture, or had not so clean ingredients. The company is amazing, I had an issue regarding a product and they were quick to respond and surpassed my expectations!

Worst Review

“I have cancer and thought this would be a good meal replacer when I didn’t feel like eating. While the ingredients seem great. The texture is unpleasant when I add 2 scoops of powder. One scoop is enough. I am not really a stevia fan and I thought I could tolerate just a little but there is too much for me in this product.

I’ve been using all their shakes for 5+ years. I’ve always bought from the store tho never online. Saw it at sprouts and decided to give it a try one day. This one was a winner since it didn’t have spirulina which makes me nauseous for hours. This is my go-to for breakfast. Better than skipping it like I used to. I’m much happier now and feel healthier and have more energy in the mornings and don’t crash anymore in the afternoon. Big, big fan of these shakes. Gonna be a lifelong customer. Highly recommend to anyone with a stomach.

Orgain Organic Protein Review | Should you buy it?

While most reviews on this product are positive, there are also some who had negative side effects similar to the stomach pain and bloating I experienced.

You might have no problems with it but I feel that despite all its benefits, I would rather choose another protein powder that offers the same advantages without the chances of discomfort.

Orgain does offer a 100% satisfaction guaranteed so if you are curious to try it you can always do it with the certainty that you can return it if you were not completely happy with it.

If you’re on the lookout for a vegan protein powder, a more reliable product that I can recommend is LivBody Lean Vegan Protein.

It is a bit more expensive than Orgain but it has more protein content and less side effect. It also contains probiotics and digestive enzymes to promote digestion and gut health

Orgain Organic Plant-Based Protein | Conclusion

Our goal with these reviews is only to give you our honest opinion so you can take a more informed decision.

I hope that after this detailed review, you have a clear understanding of what Orgain Organic Protein has to offer and if it the right fit for you.

In general, Orgain seems like a company that cares about its customers and the quality of its products so I am almost sorry I got that unpleasant bloat when drinking the shake.

After reading some other reviews I think it could be caused by one of the sweeteners they use called Erythritol. If you have drunk other products with it without any issues, then maybe consider giving Orgain a chance since they also have a 100% satisfaction guaranteed policy.

If you rather go for an alternative without Erythritol, I would recommend trying LivBody Lean Vegan Protein.
